Customer report
A commercial kitchen required reconnection and installation of a gas salamander appliance following delivery of a replacement unit. The existing unit had to be removed before installation could proceed, and access behind the appliance required clearance and cleaning prior to fitting the new system.
Diagnosis & Technical Assessment
The job involved assessing an installed gas appliance and preparing it for replacement with a larger unit. The original system was isolated before removal to allow safe handling and disconnection from the gas supply.
During removal, it was identified that the replacement appliance had a larger physical footprint than the previous unit. This required modifying the existing wall bracket positions, relocating them approximately 80 mm to accommodate the new appliance dimensions.
The gas connection required reconfiguration to align with the new appliance position. Once installed, all gas joints were tested for leaks in accordance with AS/NZS 5601.1 requirements.
Following installation, the appliance was commissioned to confirm correct operation and functional performance under normal conditions. The completed system was verified as operational following installation.
All work was completed in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulatory framework.
Solutions delivered
The existing gas appliance was isolated, disconnected, and removed from the installation location. The area behind the appliance was cleared to allow safe and unobstructed installation of the replacement unit.
Wall brackets were modified and repositioned to suit the larger dimensions of the new salamander appliance. The unit was then mounted using appropriate fixings to ensure stability and alignment with the wall support system.
The gas connection was reconfigured to match the new appliance position, ensuring correct alignment and connection integrity. All joints were tested for leaks in accordance with AS/NZS 5601.1 to confirm system safety.
The appliance was commissioned following installation to verify correct operation. The previous unit was removed from the site following completion.

Outcome & Results
The gas appliance installation was completed, and the system was commissioned to confirm correct operation. All gas joints were tested and verified, and the installation was completed in line with VBA requirements.
The appliance was returned to operational use following installation, with the system functioning as intended under normal conditions.
All work was carried out in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and safety requirements.
Repair vs Replacement
Gas appliance replacement is typically required when an existing unit is no longer suitable for operational requirements or when a new appliance with different dimensions is introduced. In this case, replacement involved adapting the existing mounting system and reconfiguring gas connections to suit the new unit.
Repair is generally appropriate when the existing appliance remains compatible with current requirements and can be restored without modification. A replacement is necessary when structural adjustments or system changes are required to support a different appliance configuration.
