Customer report

The customer requested a pressure check, installation of a customer-supplied smart toilet, and replacement of an existing guest bathroom toilet. Access was provided via a rear roller door, and images were supplied prior to attendance. The customer indicated that the smart toilet installation may be complex and requested that the work be completed to a high standard. The job included multiple fixture upgrades within the property, including a kitchen mixer replacement.

Diagnosis & Technical Assessment

The scope of works included the installation of a customer-supplied smart toilet, which required confirmation of the suitability of the waste connection following the removal of the existing toilet suite. Prior to installation, the existing toilet was removed to allow inspection of the waste position and compatibility with the new unit. The connection was assessed during trial fitment, as pre-installation confirmation was not possible.

The waste connection condition was observed during installation and required sealing to ensure a secure connection. The smart toilet installation also required integration with the water supply, including the preparation of an isolation point and the connection of flexible supply components.

A reduced-pressure zone (RPZ) device was installed to protect the potable water supply connected to the smart toilet system. This required excavation to expose the existing water service at the meter, followed by modification of the pipework to accommodate the RPZ installation. Mounting height and positioning were aligned with installation requirements.

Additional fixture work included replacing the existing kitchen mixer and installing a back-to-wall toilet suite. All systems were reconnected to the water supply and checked following installation.

All work was completed in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulatory framework.

Solutions delivered

The existing toilet suite was removed and replaced with a back-to-wall ceramic toilet suite with a bottom inlet configuration. The new unit was installed and connected to the existing plumbing system, with water supply reinstated following installation.

The customer-supplied smart toilet was installed after a trial fitting confirmed compatibility with the existing waste connection. The waste connection was sealed using silicone to ensure a proper connection. A new isolation tap and flexible hose were installed to supply the smart toilet.

To support compliance with the smart toilet installation requirements, a customer-supplied RPZ device was installed on the water supply line. This required excavation at the water service, adjustment of pipework, and mounting of the RPZ unit at the required height.

The kitchen mixer was replaced with a pull-out spray mixer. The existing mixer was removed and replaced with the new unit connected and tested. All fixtures were tested after installation, and site cleanup was completed by removing all waste materials.

All installations were completed, including toilet replacement, smart toilet integration, RPZ installation, and kitchen mixer replacement. Water supply was reinstated, and systems were tested following installation. The smart toilet installation was completed with a sealed waste connection, and all associated components were fitted. Site clean-up was completed, and all waste materials were removed. The customer confirmed satisfaction with the completed works.

All work was carried out in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and safety requirements.

Repair vs Replacement

Toilet and fixture upgrades may involve either repairing existing components or replacing them, depending on compatibility and condition. In this case, replacement was selected due to the installation of a new back-to-wall toilet and integration of a customer-supplied smart toilet system.

Smart toilet installations require compatibility between the existing waste outlet and the new unit, which can only be confirmed after removing the original fixture. Where backflow protection is required, installation of an RPZ device may be necessary to protect the potable water supply. Fixture replacement is typically undertaken where new systems or configurations are being introduced.
