Customer report
The customer had recently moved into the property and required connection of a fridge to an existing water point, along with connection of a washing machine and dryer to taps and drains. The job involved installing the appliances within the existing residential plumbing layout. The service request related to making the laundry and kitchen appliance connections operational after moving into the house.
Diagnosis & Technical Assessment
The job began with an assessment of the existing plumbing points intended to service the washing machine, dryer, and fridge. The washing machine and dryer were to be connected to the available taps and drainage points, while the fridge required connection to an existing water supply point.
During assessment of the waste setup, the current 40mm combo S+P trap was identified as inadequate for the installed arrangement and required replacement. Additional observations on site identified several plumbing elements that could be adjusted to better align with the existing plumbing and the appliance connection layout.
Technical checks were then carried out following completion of the installation work. A test run was performed on the washing machine to confirm water flow and drainage performance under operation. The fridge connection was also checked after connecting to the water point and confirmed to be working well. These checks established that the appliance connections were functioning as intended at completion.
All work was completed in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulatory framework.
Solutions delivered
The completed work included connecting the washing machine and dryer to the existing taps and drainage points, and connecting the fridge to the existing water point. The appliance installation was completed within the existing plumbing layout at the property.
To address the drainage issue identified during assessment, the inadequate 40mm combo S+P trap was replaced. A 50mm combo S+P trap was also installed as part of the completed plumbing configuration. Minor plumbing adjustments were made to better align with the existing plumbing installation and support the appliance connections.
Once the installation and adjustments were complete, the work area was cleaned, and the connected systems were tested. This approach resolved the immediate appliance connection requirements and confirmed that the installed plumbing arrangement was operating correctly at handover.

Repair vs Replacement
For appliance connection work, an adjustment may be suitable if the existing plumbing layout can support the required installation with minor changes. A replacement becomes necessary when a component is not suitable for the operating setup. In this job, the existing 40mm combo S+P trap was found to be inadequate, so replacement formed part of the completed solution. The remaining work involved connecting the appliances to the available plumbing points and making minor adjustments to improve suitability within the existing installation.
