Customer report
The customer reported that the hot water was no longer hot at the Richmond property. The documented project scope involved resolving the hot water issue by replacing the existing internal 250L electric storage hot water unit with a roof-mounted continuous flow gas hot water system. The work required decommissioning the existing unit, installing new gas pipework, connecting hot and cold water services, and commissioning the new system.
Diagnosis & Technical Assessment
The service was structured around replacing the existing internal 250L electric storage hot water unit with a new continuous-flow gas hot water system. The existing unit was scheduled for decommissioning, with associated services capped and the unit removed from service.
The documented scope included installation of a new gas line from the gas meter to the roof-mounted hot water unit. Gas pipework was to run from the gas meter cupboard up the external wall, over the gutter, along the roofline, and under the roof deck to the new unit location. A boom lift was used for the external wall section of the gas line installation.
Hot and cold water services were connected from the existing upstairs bathroom connection points. The scope also included gas pressure checks, temperature verification, full system testing, and commissioning of the new continuous flow unit. The gas pipework installation was specified for pressure testing and certification in accordance with AS/NZS 5601.
All work was completed in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulatory framework.
Solutions delivered
The completed works involved decommissioning the existing internal electric storage hot water unit and installing a Thermann 26L NG 50 Degree continuous flow gas hot water unit on the roof. Associated hot- and cold-water connections were made from existing upstairs bathroom connection points.
A new gas line was installed from the gas meter to the roof-mounted unit. The gas pipework route included the external wall, roofline, and roof deck area. A boom lift was used to support the high-level installation work.
The new system was commissioned following installation. Hot-water and gas-line testing were completed, and the technician conducted a walkthrough of the completed work areas with the client. The recorded outcome states that the job went according to plan.
Tools, Parts & Systems Used
- Boom lift
- Thermann 26L NG 50 Degree unit
- New gas pipework
- Hot and cold water connections
Outcome & Results
The existing electric storage hot water system was decommissioned and replaced with a roof-mounted continuous flow gas hot water system. Gas line testing and hot water testing were completed after installation. The technician recorded that the work went according to plan and that the client was shown the completed work areas.
All work was carried out in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and safety requirements.
Repair vs Replacement
Hot water systems may be repaired or replaced depending on the system type, condition, location, and required service outcome. Where an existing storage unit is replaced with a continuous flow gas system, the work can require more than a unit swap, including new gas pipework, water reconnections, decommissioning, and commissioning.
For this Richmond job, the selected solution was to replace the internal electric storage unit with a roof-mounted Thermann continuous-flow gas hot-water system. The work included installing a new gas line, hot and cold water connections, testing, and commissioning.
