Customer report
The customer reported a gas leak at the Toorak property. The gas company had attended, turned off the gas supply and recommended that plumbing work be undertaken. The job subsequently proceeded as a full gas renewal involving the gas supply from the meter towards the existing gas appliances.
Diagnosis & Technical Assessment
The reported issue involved a gas leak that had resulted in the gas company shutting off the gas supply. The work scope provided for a full gas renewal, where testing established that the existing galvanised gas pipework was unsuitable for reuse.
The job proceeded as a full gas renewal. The installation plan involved running a new 40 mm copper gas main from the gas meter along the building and routing the new gas supply towards the existing appliances. The recorded systems included the hot water service, ducted gas heater and gas cooktop.
Access requirements formed part of the technical planning for the installation. The pipe route involved high-level sections along the building, with roof and ceiling access available through the foyer ceiling manhole for the planned route towards the ducted gas heater.
Installation of the new main commenced from the gas meter and continued towards the hot water unit. After the gas line was completed, the finished installation was tested and commissioned.
All work was completed in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulatory framework.
Solutions delivered
Zebra Plumbing completed a full gas renewal at the Toorak property. A new 40 mm copper gas main was installed from the gas meter, replacing reliance on the existing gas supply arrangement.
The installation involved running the copper main along the building towards the property’s gas services. Copper gas pipe and fittings were used throughout the new installation, with pipe clips specified to secure the main along its route. The recorded work scope incorporated the existing hot water service, ducted gas heater and gas cooktop as the gas systems associated with the renewal.
During installation, most of the 40 mm main was run from the gas meter towards the hot water unit before additional lengths of pipe were obtained to complete the line. The gas line was subsequently finished, tested and commissioned.

Repair vs Replacement
For an existing gas installation, the decision between repairing part of the system and renewing the gas line depends on the condition and suitability of the existing pipework identified during assessment and testing.
